The Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) has declared Ukraine to be one of its primary global priorities. GOPAC is therefore deploying its Executive Director, Akaash Maharaj, on a mission to Kiev, to contribute to efforts by Ukraine’s legislators to lead their country through the current crisis.
He will participate in strategy sessions with our national chapter, GOPAC Ukraine, and will meet with GOPAC’s partners from international institutions, diplomatic missions, and citizen organizations. He will also structure a co-operative network amongst GOPAC’s global parliamentarians, to enable Ukraine’s democratic institutions to obtain support from the capitals of the world.
GOPAC is a worldwide alliance of parliamentarians working together to defeat corruption, advance democracy, and uphold the rule of law. GOPAC Ukraine is one of our fifty national chapters, each of which is composed of legislators from both government and opposition parties.
We believe that the key to restoring stability in Ukraine is combatting political corruption, as part of a broader effort to increase the legitimacy and strength of public institutions. GOPAC’s objective is to help Ukraine survive the immediate threat of territorial disintegration, and give the country a fighting chance to progress onwards to become a secure and fully-functioning democracy.
Akaash Maharaj's mission in Kiev will be from 21-26 April 2014.
